Richard Vickers

Richard is an artist, researcher and educator whose work addresses the material, social and political dimensions of contemporary photographic practice. His research investigates how digital and networked images might be transformed into critical photographic objects through processes of détournement, recombination and installation. Engaging with theories of the Spectacle, post-medium conditions and the expanded field of photography, his practice examines the residual materiality of images produced within platform culture.

He has more than two decades of experience in UK higher education, including senior leadership roles in curriculum development, research and digital innovation. He has presented and exhibited internationally on themes relating to media convergence, online spectatorship and practice-based research methodologies. His current projects explore the commodified self-portrait, algorithmic culture and the possibilities for critical photographic practice in the era of augmented capitalism.

Richard is a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and his work has been exhibited internationally, featured in National Geographic, shortlisted for the SXSW Interactive Awards and won the Flashforward Film Festival.
